Somerset House is the home of the Courtauld Institue, and the Courtauld Gallery, serving as such as a home for some of the worlds most important old master and impressionist paintings. However, in recent years it has also opened its doors to events in its courtyard, and it is fast becoming a firm favourite with Londoners for its outdoor film screening and ice rink in the winter time.
Somerset House is just off the Strand, and is a major arts and cultural centre right in the heart of London. Whilst London has its fair share of artistic and cultural centres, Somerset House is one of the most welcoming, and has taken great strides towards being a really inclusive home for art, and exciting people about its collections with its range of other activities.
Getting to Somerset House is incredibly easy. You can walk up the Strand from Charing Cross, or across the river from Waterloo. There are nearby tube stations in Covent Garden and Temple. There is also pedestrian access from Victoria Embankment, if you enjoy a walk along the river. Any bus that goes along the Strand stops near Somerset House, and river boats can be taken to or from Embankment Pier or Savoy Pier.
The Courtauld Gallery has an extensive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings, and forms the centrepiece to the visual arts work done in Somerset House. This permanent collection underpins the rest of the visual arts work that is done in the building. There are other, temporary exhibitions, and you should check the website to find out what they are when you are visiting.
The central courtyard provides a focus for much of the other activity that takes place in Somerset House. In the summer 55 fountains spray to various heights in a truly spectacular display, whilst in the winter it is converted into an ice rink, and skaters whizz around it in beautiful surroundings. Evening events in the courtyard include musical concerts, outdoor screenings of films, and other events.
Somerset House offers free guided tours every Thursday at 13:15 and 14:45, and every Saturday at 12:15, 13:15, 14:15, and 15:15. These will take you through the history of the building in all its many incarnations over the last 500 years. There is another guided tour, which is not as regular, which shows participants around those areas of Somerset House that have been used as the locations for films. Every Saturday from 14:00 to 15:30 Somerset House offers free family workshops, during which children aged 6 - 12 years as well as their parents are welcomed in to try some new arts and crafts.
Somerset House is one of Londons real success stories, and is an attraction that keeps adding to what it offers, and developing what it does. There is something for everyone at Somerset House, from high art to low films, to just sitting and enjoying fountains, or making things with your kids. It is a jewel in Londons crown, perched on the river bank.
